This well known brain teaser puzzle was invented by Danish mathematician Piet Hein in 1936. Consisting of 7 nonidentical wooden pieces, there are 240 different ways to build a solid cube. Arches, walls, staps, towers, etc. can also be created from the Soma Cube. The seven pieces that go into the Soma Cube represent all the ways in which three or four cubes can be arranged other than in a straight line.
Soma Cube owners claim that after gaining some familiarity with the pieces, they speed up their solving enormously. Providing children with a Soma Cube gives them an excellent way of nurturing their grasp of spatial relationships.
